The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Jay Z Equiano? WHAT?

Olaudah Equiano (c. 1745 – 31 March 1797), also known as Gustavus Vassa, was one of the most prominent people of African heritage (Igbo) involved in the British debate for the abolition of the slave trade. His autobiography depicted the horrors of slavery and helped influence British lawmakers to abolish the slave trade through the Slave Trade Act of 1807. Despite his enslavement as a young man, he purchased his freedom and worked as a seaman, merchant, and explorer in South America, the Caribbean, the Arctic, the American colonies, and the United Kingdom.

All Star Cast to Star in Adaptation of Iceberg Slim's "Mama Black Widow"

Mos Def, Rihanna, Macy Gray, Anthony Anderson and others have come together to star in the upcoming film adaption of late writer Iceberg Slim's classic, Mama Black Widow.

Set in the 1930s, the plot revolves around an African-American family's migration from the racially tense state of Mississippi to the ghetto-themed underworld of Chicago, Illinois. Focused on lead actor Brian J White's character, "Otis Tilson," the story emphasizes his difficulties in trying to keep his family together as they encounter alcoholism, prostitution, sexual deviation and racial injustice.

Directed by Darren Grant, the film will also star actresses Kerry Washington and Angela Bassett.

Rapper-turned-actor Ice-T will also be paying homage to the author by producing a documentary on Slim's rise from pimp to established novelist.

"Iceberg Slim has been one of the most influential people in black culture," Ice-T previously told New York Post. " Few people know the story behind the man and it's time that story is told."

No release dates have been announced on either production as of yet.

In related news, Uproar Entertainment will be re-releasing the Slim album Reflections originally produced in 1976 by David Drozen. The disc offers listeners a poignant and memorable look at Slim's true life experiences.

Reflections will hit stores on Tuesday, October 28.

Often quoted and referenced by a range of hip-hop artists including Ice Cube and Jay-Z, among countless others Slim published 8 known novels before passing away in April 1992.

Hip Hop Violinist Miri Ben-Ari Releases Obama Dedication Video

Grammy Award-winning violinist Miri Ben-Ari has released a new music video entitled “Stand With Me,” a rendition of the National Anthem dedicated to Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Recruiting mogul Russell Simmons and fashion designer Marc Ecko for the project, Ben-Ari is aiming to capture the excitement of the American people before the 2008 Election Day.

And with her native Israel being an important foreign policy subject, Ben-Ari hopes to influence the Jewish community to place more support behind Senator Obama.

“At this time of economic crisis, we need leadership that can bring change to our country while capturing the essence of the American Dream,” Ben-Ari explained to AllHipHop.com. “Coming to America as a new immigrant, poor and without my family helped me to better understand and appreciate the American Dream.”

Assisting with the video is accomplished filmmaker Kenzo Hakuta, who apprenticed under internationally acclaimed video artist Nam June Paik.

Hakuta’s previous work has played in the Tribeca and Mill Valley Film Festivals, and garnered him a nomination as a Rockefeller Film Fellowship nominee.

A former student of late classical teacher Isaac Stern, Ben-Ari has come to be affectionately known as the “Hip-Hop Violinist” for her innovative fusion of Hip-Hop, Classical, and R&B.

Kim Osorio over at Global Grind recently premiered her own version of the Barbara Walters-helmed ABC talk show The View.

There seems to be range between the four women. You may remember Jenn The Penn from BET’s Ultimate Hustler, that Apprentice-like reality series Damon Dash had a few years back. I’m not sure what she does now, but her name seems to be circulating a lot.

You already know KO’s resume. First Editor In Chief of The Source, stint at BET.com and now Vice President of content at Global Grind. Angela Yee is responsible for 50% of World Star HipHop’s good footage in the last few months. She’s killing it these days. I see her eventually shooting to the top as a radio personality. Last but not least, Tionna Smalls. She’s the lesser known of the bunch, but by far the more outspoken.

The quartet discussed hip-hop couples like Jayonce (Jay and Beyonce) and Chrianna (Chris Brown and Rihanna) in the first episode. See it for yourself below.

As Public Enemy’s mighty mouth that roared, Chuck D upped hip hop’s aesthetic ante like no emcee before or since. B.C. (before Chuck) the genius of rap was most often its stylistic sophistication. A.D. (after D) we all recognized the power of hip hop to mobilize the masses and elevate mind-states without losing an iota of its visceral appeal; “food for the brain, beats for the feet,” as Chuck himself once rhymed, the bourgeois and boulevard both rocked with seminar-worthy precision. You’d think P.E.’s legendary recordings, production innovations (the handiwork of Chuck and Hank Shocklee’s beats-by-hardcore-committee, the Bomb Squad), and turbulent career twists and turns would be more than enough to fill his resume. Sean “Diddy” Combs has announced today that he’s bought out the popular streetwear clothing line ENYCE from Liz Claiborne Inc.

"Enyce is a brand that I have always admired, and they have been a very important player in the young men's sportswear arena for over a decade. I am really excited to bring it into our portfolio of brands that already includes Sean John and Zac Posen,” Diddy said in a release. “Given our track record of success in marketing products such as Ciroc Vodka, Unforgivable by Sean John, and all of our television titles, I look forward to adding our expertise to an already hot fashion line. Our long-term plan is to grow the Enyce brand through innovative marketing, expansion of the menswear and boy's lines, and launching into new licensing categories.”

The Sean John owner says that in spite of the current economic woes, he’s confident the purchase was a great investment. “The current economic climate may be challenging, but we believe it is also an opportunity, and we are really excited to add Enyce to our lineup.”

Apple just announced that it's sold 6.9 million of 'em during its financial fourth quarter, beating out the 6.1 million total first-gen iPhones sold in the previous five quarters -- and beating RIM's total sales this quarter, which Apple seems excited about. Of course, that represents worldwide availability in 51 countries vs the initial US-only launch, so it's not totally unexpected that the numbers are up, but it means that Apple's hit its goal of 10 million iPhones sold in 2008, which should cause some celebration in Cupertino. Apple also seems pleased with Mac sales, which are up 21 percent over a year ago to 2.1 million -- more than it's sold in any other quarter ever. All that combines with 11 million iPods sold for a total profit of $1.1 billion on revenues of $7.9 billion -- that's a lot of scratch. Still times are tough, so Steve, do you have a seemingly-cautious statement about the US economy that also doubles as a smug shot at your competitors? "We don't yet know how this economic downturn will affect Apple. But we're armed with the strongest product line in our history, the most talented employees and the best customers in our industry. Barack Obama May Become The Seventh Not the First, Black President

If Sen. Barack Obama wins the Democratic nomination for president and goes on to win the White House, he would be the seventh, not the first black man to occupy the oval office, according to three black historians whose work to uncover the racial backgrounds of U.S. presidents has been largely ignored until now.
Black male historians have written extensively that Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge and Dwight Eisenhower had black ancestors. These historians are Joel A. Rodgers, Dr. Leroy Vaughn, and Dr. Auset Bakhufu.
Black historians, however, were not the first to write about the five presidents' racially mixed families. White historians and political opponents also wrote about the men's black ancestors, but the books were either destroyed, went out of print or are hard to find.
A common theme associated with the earlier black presidents is that they all passed for white, sometimes destroying family photographs and letters, to hide their racial backgrounds.
Sen. Obama cannot obviously pass for white because of his dark skin color. Obama makes it clear he is the son of a Kenyan economist and white female anthropologist.
Interracial relationships between black women and white men explain the racial backgrounds of some of the presidents, but not all.
Sexual relationships between black men and white women have produced offspring. Andrew Jackson, the nation's seventh's president, was the son of a black man and an Irish woman, according to historians.
Interracial relationships between black men and Native American women also produced racially mixed offspring.
Rodgers, who died in 1966, wrote the book The Five Black Presidents, and Dr. Vaughn devotes a chapter to the five black presidents in his Black People and Their Place in World History. Rogers and Vaughn agree Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln, Harding and Coolidge had black ancestors.
Dr. Auset Bakhufu, author of The Six Black Presidents' Black Blood: White Masks includes Eisenhower.
Despite author Toni Morrison's 1998 New Yorker magazine article that claims Bill Clinton is the nation's first black president because of his womanizing and frequenting McDonald's restaurants, Clinton is not listed.

"P.A.T.H." (which stands for Preserving, Archiving and Teaching Hip-Hop History) is the new film by award-winning documentary filmmaker Dan Perez . It documents the P.A.T.H. Hip-Hop Academy , the first ever summer camp of it's kind in Miami, Florida.

P.A.T.H. is the brainchild of popular Miami hip-hop artist Brimstone127 who after eight years, finally found a home for his program at the Miami Light Project's downtown Miami studio.

Miami's most talented artists and performers served as instructors. The list included urban artist Krave, DJ Immortal from Scratch Academy, International B-Girl Beta Rawkz and Soulflower, who has shared the mic with emcees such as Erykah Badu, KRS-ONE and Outkast.

During the four week camp, teenagers from ages 12-18 studied Hip-Hop history, the art of deejaying, emceeing (rapping), B-boying and B-girling (break-dancing), and urban art.

The camp also featured an impressive lineup of guest speakers. Hip-Hop pioneer Grandmaster Dee of Whodini, DJ Epps, Spider Loc of G-Unit, DJ Magic, popular Miami artist Lebo, Faisal Tavernier of Urban America Network and international motivational speaker Kirk Nugent were just some of the names that took the time to stop in and address the students.

Beanie Sigel, Boxer- Winky Wright & NHRA Racer- Antron Brown will be teaming up with Sprint and Motorola to drive for a cause at the Urban Youth Racing School's 3rd annual Grand PRIX of Philadelphia Celebrity Race. Recording artist Freeway, Young Chris, Frank from The Roots , and Muggsy Malone are scheduled to participate in races that start at 11:00am at the NE corner of Broad & Washington near the Philadelphia Sports Complex on September 6th, 2008. Sprint and Motorola organized the race in conjunction with the Urban Youth Racing School and is expected to draw out a crowd of 5,000 or more. UYRS founder, AnthonyMartin, just recently announced the schools efforts to expand its presence within the entertainment and hip hop community while forming alliances to promote African -American drivers within Nascar. Martin asserts " There are a lot of African- American kids interested in Nascar and the racing industry, but don't know how to go about getting involved. The UYRS was founded in 1998 to fill that gap. Over 2,000 students have graduated from our program with the knowledge of racing, marketing, and sponsorship within the racing industry." Prize packages from sponsors Sprint, XBOX and Warpath Records will be given away during the festivities to winning teams. Warpath Records will also be announcing that the winner will be a driver in the upcoming video shoot for Muggsy Malones single " Somewhere to be at ", anticipated to be leaked exclusively to Sprint Mobile users. Media personalities from CNN, FOX, and ABC News will join four person race teams in order to raise money for the school's upcoming fiscal year. The Outlawz launch record label in Australia

Many rappers such as the on and off again banned from Australia Snoop Dogg love the southern continent; but none in the past have set up a local record label let alone used their fame and success to further the local music industry.

The Outlawz, formed by the late Tupac Shakur, have done just that, forming Outlaw Recordz Australia.

"We plan to use this new company to not only further the Outlawz brand in Australia but to also help develop talent down there, as well as offer Australian's American products they may not have had access to in the past."

In addition to that Outlaw Recordz Australia will release a joint album between The Outlawz and local musicians that the group will record during their September tour and in the future plan on releasing more CDs from Australian musicians.

"America 2 Australia: The Best of the Best" will be a double-disc LP and also include a compilation of 14 accompanying music videos to be mainly filmed during the Outlawz Australian visit.

This is an unprecedented opportunity for Australian urban music, and for Australian artists to be a part of the movement that will carry on Tupac's legacy.

"They love and support real Hip-Hop and Australia really has great artists too," Young Noble states. "We are very excited about going back for this tour and looking forward to recording this album with all the top Aussie talent."

The 1994 release received the coveted five mic rating from The Source magazine, and is considered by many, to be the greatest single Hip Hop album of all times.

"Every song on Illmatic will be analyzed, interpreted and then re-articulated in a kind of intellectual sense from his own base in Hip Hop and we’re trying to deal with that seriously," Dyson told AllHipHop.com Wednesday."

Nowadays West Coast Rap is a multimillion dollar business, but how did it all begin? This website will take you on a trip to the forgotten days of the early West Coast Hip Hop scene when fame came before money and the foremost goal was to get the people dancing and the party rocking. The time was fresh and wild in the early 80´s. DJ´s like Michael "Mixxing" Moore and Tony Joseph moved from New York to Los Angeles with a bag full of skills and ideas to conquer the young West Coast Music Scene. They had the highest rated radio shows in Los Angeles on KJLH and KACE called "The Saturday Night Jam" ,"The Traffic Jam", and "L.A. Sunday". In the year 1982 the Rappers Rapp Label, owned by Duffy Hooks, emerged with Gigolo Rap performed by Disco Daddy and Captain Rapp, the first West Coast Hip Hop production. Roger Claytons Uncle Jamms Army was throwing big block parties and the scene was dominated by DJs like Egyptian Lover, Dr. Dre and Chris “The Glove” Taylor. The radio station K-day, hosted by Greg Mack, went on air 1983 which showcased the first live mixing shows on LA radio with the legendary Mixmasters. Clubs like the Radio and Eve after Dark, with Ice-T, Kid Frost, the Spin Masters and Grandmaster Lonzos famous World Class Wreckin Cru made the party people dance the "Freak" to an uptempo beat with synthesizer and vocoder. These clubs and legendary events like the Uncle Jamm parties in the LA Sports Arena captivated the people who became addicted to this new form of music. The Biggest Perpetrator That You've Seen Thus Far

In light of the recent expose' of William Leonard Roberts II, AKA Rick Ross as not living up to the claims he has made in his lyrics, I decided to write a lil piece and put my take on the matter out there.

First off let me say that this is a very personal topic for me. Growing up in L.A. during Freeway's heyday allowed me to get a glimpse at who the real Ricky Ross was. I had a problem with Rick Ross the rapper from day one regarding his name. Before I had ever heard him spit a rhyme, I had a problem with him naming himself after Freeway. Wikipedia summed up the initial problem that I have with Rick Ross best as follows " William Leonard Roberts II, better known by his stage name Rick Ross, is an American rapper. His stage name is derived from the name of drug trafficker Freeway Rick Ross, to whom he has no connection." No connection. So the first question that popped into my mind was who was this guy to name himself after Freeway Rick when he more than likely had no idea who he was? And I know that rapping is a form of entertainment and that glamourizing crime figures is a staple to most rappers success. But this was something more. Rick Ross wasn't the first rapper to name himself after a notorious black gangster (50 Cent and the Real 50 Cent), or the first rapper to name himself after Freeway Rick (IPhilly Rapper Freeway borrowed his name from Freeway Rick as well), but it was the way that he was going about doing it. Now lets take the time to put this little situation into perspective. When I look-up Rick Ross in wikipedia, the Rapper Rick Ross appears before Freeway Ricky Ross from whom he borrowed his stage name. This creates the possibility for today's average Hip-Hop fan to mistake the Rapper Rick Ross for the real Rick Ross. I am familiar with the situation and it is confusing to me. Now I don't know how real Rick Ross the Rapper is or isn't but I do know this:

From a personal appearance standpoint, Rick Ross the Rapper could not be more far off from Freeway Rick. Freeway Rick was probably the most unassuming drug dealer ever. Very modest in appearance, no jewelry, no luxury cars, no none of that. He would never walk around with a medallion of himself around his neck. No boasting no bragging Freeway Rick would never bring unnecessary attention to himself.

I find it ironic that a guy who used to be a prison guard would name himself after someone doing a life sentence. There is nothing like the spirit of capitalism.

Anyways, these rappers need to do there homework before they pick a name out of hat. Rick Ross the Rapper has made alot of money off of Freeway Rick and has probably never given him a dime. That's a shame.
